Why we all need the Police …
Some thing strange has been happening to my friend who lives in North Melbourne. It is starting to become a weekly occurence. My friend lives in an apartment complex with its own parking. Unfortunately, the parking is not secure.
In the past few months, there has been weekly occurence of vandalism in the parking garage. The most unusual was a vehicle with all 4 tyres removed; it was left standing on some bricks and boxes. Vehicle registration plates were removed and as recently as last week, scratches were made on all panels of the vehicles; on the bonnet, rooftop and side doors.
On all occasions, the police were informed and the crimes were noted. Last week, a request was made to the police to increase patrol to the area, given the fact that the vandalisms have become a weekly event.
The request was flatly refused. To me, it just does not make sense. First, one would consider vandalism a crime. Two, for all we know, it could escalate to more serious crimes, resulting in bodily injuries of people. One would think it is worth biting this in the bud and arrest the perpetrators.
I can understand that police resources are stretched and limited. And that is why we have community crimewatch. Isn’t that when we call the police and request for assistance when we think someone looks suspicious? And when the perpetrators return weekly on a regular basis, one would think it would be about right for the police to turn up at the weekly meeting to break the crime ring?
Does it require a really really serious crime to be committed before the police get into action? Does it require a resident to be seriously hurt before something be done?
I just heard on the news about a vigilante attack on a vehicle. I am beginning to understand the existence of vigilantes now.
Refering back to my title, police reports are still required for insurance claims. I hope I never have to call the police for assistance.

Corinna, if this is a weekly/regular occurance, perhaps the owners of the carpark (landlords, etc) should be installing surveillance cameras in the car park in the hope to catch those acting unlawfully.
If it is possible to do the above, I think it would give the police more solid evidance on who is actually behind it all. (Prob make their lives slightly easier too!).
Maybe it’s the Police who are doing it! That would explain why they refuse to increase patrols at least.
