Decided to head over to Big W (Southland) to buy some new shoe laces yesterday. The old one was already wearing out, and I didn’t want it to snap on me while I was still wearing it.
Nothing really out of the ordinary, but when I was going to find a checkout lane with the least amount of people to pay for my new shoe laces I noticed something different. This wasn’t your average checkout line.
Nope, it was a self service checkout line with just the one Big W employee looking over the 4 checkout stations.
All you do is put your item under the barcode scanner, it scans it in. You place it into a bag. Then it totals it all up. You select your payment method (cash, credit card etc…), and then insert your coins/notes into the machine.
Pretty easy, and painless.
Wonder what that means for those who used to work at the checkouts, and now are being either placed elsewhere, or perhaps out of work?
