The price of bananas

Was in Victoria Market yesterday doing the usual weekly shopping. I chance upon bananas, you know, the yellow skin fruit that is running short of in Australia. Guess what was the price of 1 kg of it yesterday? A whooping $10 a kg.

I can’t afford those kind of prices for a fruit, but I will bet my bottom dollar that the banana farmer is not getting the majority of that $10 a kg for his fruit. Too bad there is no such thing as canned bananas. I’ll have to stick with dried bananas for the moment, even that may raise in price, eventually.

Definately not on the cheap price. It’s related to what’s been happening up in Far North Queensland.

They’ve even resorted to selling green coloured bananas at Safeway at those high prices.

Apparently the 13kg boxes of bananas are selling for about $90+ at the Footscary Fruit Market (I think that’s wholesale price), so they do get a bit of a mark up when they hit stores/markets.

$90 now, but before the cyclone, they were about $25 (the prices listed were mentioned on a radio show a few days ago).

    Hi,
Came across this post and am stunned: A$10 a kg? Over in Bangalore, each fruit(& I shall take a pic of the same during my next visit) is just Rs 2/-. That is, for 1 dollar, you should get around 16 nos!
    :)
