Explosive mixture?

Read on news.com.au today about the explosive mixture of mixing Diet Coke with the lolly Mentos. The mixture of these two can cause a Coke geyser. Now, wouldn’t that be fun. Imagine a coke fountain in the middle of Federation Square?!?

On the other hand, imagine mixing coke cola with mentos in your stomach …I wonder what other type of candies can cause a coke fountain?

Mixing Mentos and Coke in your stomach is not really a problem; what causes the “explosion” is a physical, not chemical reaction. What happens is that the very porous surface of the lolly causes the gas in the drink to separate from the mixture very quickly (it’s a process known as seeding, if I’m not mistaken). The increase in the volume of the gas ends up shooting the drink out of the bottle.

In your stomach, most of the gas will have already separated in the process of swallowing the drink and mixing with stomach fluids; also, most people don’t swallow Mentos lollies whole, so there would be no reaction anyway.
