Car Sharing

carshare.jpgI have been checking out some of the other Metblog cities lately. I found an interesting post on the Atlanta Metblog, about a car sharing program they plan to test.

Two companies in Melbourne have been running a car sharing program for the past couple of years. Car sharing is basically renting a car on demand and picking up the car at local parking spots in your neighbourhood. You do not need to pay for repairs, gasoline, insurance, or registration. You can rent a car for an hour or a few days. The scheme works well in congested city areas such as Melbourne.

Currently, the two companies cover a few spots in the suburbs directly next to the CBD (Richmond, Carlton etc.) There are no cars in the CBD. Prices differ between companies and the plan that you choose but the most you will pay is $12 an hour.

This scheme may be quite good if you don’t use a car on a daily basis.

What an awesome idea. I’ve been living without a car now for about 9 months and I actually enojoy it. Converse to many Melbournions oppinions, I recon we have a great public transport system.
