Why is it so?

julius.jpgDoes anyone remember Professor Julius Sumner Miller and his show “Why is it so?” on ABC? I’m showing my age here, but he did make an impact on mini-neomien - primary school mini-neomien at that. As a recalcitrant uni-student, I got my science fix by catching Dr Karl on Triple J.

Always one to ask “but why?”, don’t you? I’ve realized that apart from the odd squeamish biology lesson with Professor von Hagens on SBS and that mad pair Adam and Jamie of Mythbusters I’m a little science deficient. (Okay, maybe not that deficient.)

This week is National Science Week - I heard those groans back there! All over Melbourne, and in regional cities of Victoria, boffins of all sorts are putting on free and some not so free events.

Personally, I’ve seen Jet a few times now (BRILLIANT live by the way), so lining up at the POW in the rain for their show tonight won’t be on my list of to dos…I’m heading out to the Age Theatre to hear Professor Jenny Graves of ANU talk about why the Y chromosome is slowly losing it’s genes…..that’s right - you boys are becoming extinct! Mwahahhah!

Those of you interested in security, crypto, biometrics and all things Orwellian, should get down to BMW Edge for “The Science behind Security” tomorrow night. Not the most inspiring name, but damn topical nonetheless. It’s a freebie too.

For those of you still reading, and I’ve got a feeling this one might be a popular one, Mountain Goat Brewery - who craft a fine thirst-quenching local ale, are throwing open their doors to host “The Chemistry of Beer: Mountain Goat Brewery Tour” on Wednesday night. It’s free but you have to book….and yes, you get to try beer or three for nix. Not that bad an incentive really.

Check out the list of events….you never know, you might learn a thing or two.

I mainly remember Miller from the Cadbury ads … perhaps he influenced my life-long love affair with chocolate!

Yes! the glass and a half of FULL CREAM milk….I was looking for a vintage pic but couldn’t find it. If you are in for a good laugh, click on the “why is it so?” link - ABC actually have the episodes online…..BRILLIANT!
