Is John So your bro?

john-so.jpg

I have a question for everyone - do you think John So is a great guy? I think he’s ace, and after I read the Good Weekend Article on him, I think he is even more so. The article gives a really good insight into what he is like, as a person, politician and representative of Melbourne. It’s a great article, except for the writer making fun of So’s accent, and calling him, “a Chinese Elmer Fudd in both speech and looks.”
Here’s a few facts about So that I thought were interesting -
*He was born in Hong Kong, the eldest of three brothers. His father died when he was only five.
*He moved to Australia at 17, where he completed his high school education.
*He enrolled and completed a degree in Science at Melbourne Uni.
*The white Australian policy aggrivated him, and he even thought of moving to America to complete his study.
*However, he instead joined the Chinese Overseas students assoc. and the Anti-Vietnam war movement.
*For eight years he taught Chemistry to kids at Fitzroy High.
*In 73′, he started up a Chinese restaurant. In ten years he had several of them. He was so good at it, that he started advising others on what to it with their hospitality businesses.
*In 91′ he gave it up to get into politics, and was elected into the Melbourne city council.

He sounds like a great guy. He has a great background and is very personable. But what has he done/do? What policies and achievements has he brought to Melbourne?

hey there Zara, check out my post Make it So! you can vote for John for the World Mayor 06 Awards!

Neil, check out his essay on the site….I’m not sure if you remember, before John came along the City of Melbourne was paralysed with in fighting and rorting. He’s done brilliant work in a very tough job.

Can anyone remember the name of the Lord Mayor before him?

I read the article on the tram on Monday. Awesome stuff.

“The white Australian policy aggrivated him” - This is reason enough to spur any non-Caucasian to better heights. Hell i’d be mighty turned-off myself if i was subjected to racial profiling. Watch me run for Mayor in 2020! LOL.
