Pub food

Yesterday I decided to pay my local pub, in Notting Hill, a visit. I had dinner there, and was somewhat shocked that steak isn’t as cheap as it used to be. I remember paying $10-12 for a good prime steak, but yesterday, it seems prices have gone up to $16.50!

Beer still seems to be as cheap though. $12 for a jug of Carlton, and $13 for a jug of Coopers. The only time I’ve found cheaper beer is $10 a jug at Bunker on Swanston St (an RMIT uni pub, I’d think).

The usual annoyance with the Nott however is the band. Its loud. It tends to be bad cover songs. And it starts just as dinner stops, so from about 9pm onwards, you’re forced to sit elsewhere, or fear losing your voice and hearing, trying to shout across the table just to “talk” to your friends.

Where do you go for cheap pub food and beer? (having a good environment is a plus point)

I haven’t been able to move on from the days when pub meals were no more than $10. It’s been more than 5 years since I had a pub meal that was $10 but still, it hasn’t totally sunk in. I’m still holding on to the hope!!

In relation to loud cover bands - Even though I’m a Melbourne musician, the volume just seems rediculous half the time. Lots of my friends wear special ear plugs that reduce the decibels by 15 so they don’t damage their ears. I know I sound like a Nanna, but some of my friends have tinitus already… it’s just not worth it.

    City wise…
Oxford Scholar (Swanston St.) lunch deals when uni is on
The Lounge (Swanston st.) Monday nights pay the time

Most of the time, the pubs have a certain day when steaks are cheap.
