Rain, rain, come and stay
It’s coming to the end of winter and our water storage’s are 46.9% full.
As much as I’m yearning to say good bye to the cold in my bones and let my toes see the sun (after a serious pedicure, of course), I’m a little concerned.
According to Rob Skinner, MD of Melbourne Water - they expected 332mm of rainfall across our catchments for winter.
So far, we’ve racked up 166mm. This time last year the catchments were 53.6% full.
The farmers aren’t faring well. It’s quite an awful reality, unless we get some down pour - please please - many will have to sell their farms and livestock.
I’m pretty pedantic when it comes to water, probably as I’ve travelled in areas where if you don’t bring a couple of hundred litres of the fine stuff, you’d be hard pressed to survive a day.
I’ve OCD when it comes to dripping taps; when I do wash my car, I use a bucket - though currently it’s being held together by dirt; the water I use for the car is usually recycled from my handwashing - that handwashing pile is needing a little loving at the mo; I use a cup of water when I brush my teeth; I actually turn off the taps when I’m washing my hair - it’s kinda cold, but it’s a small sacrifice.
They’re all small things, but I’m hoping it will help.
Melbourne Water have a program called the Home Water Investigator, it’s a nifty little tool that helps you look at how you manage your water consumption at home. It won the Pirelli INTERNETional Award in 2003, a multimedia science communication prize.
Aimed at kids, I think us big kids can learn something from it.
As they say, every drop counts.
