Loaded – by Christos Tsiolkas.

Ari is a 19 year old bisexual man struggling with having a good time around Melbourne, and being the upstanding yound Greek boy his parents want him to be. Tsiolkas shows us 24 hours in the life of Ari, showing him having dinner with his family in the suburbs, and going out to gay nightclubs in the city at night.
This book is great, because it has four chapters, all showing off the four points of Melbourne – East, West, North, South.
So, even if you aren’t up for the full-on sex scenes in the book, it’s still good to scan through and check out the descriptions of the city, and see how much they have changed (from my recollection, Ari visits the vacant land space/car lot, where Crown now stands) since the book was published in 1995.
It’s an extremly, easy, quick read because Tsiolkas uses lots of dialouge, and the flow of the book is so easy to get wrapped up in.
The book was made into a movie starring Alex Dimitriades (but re-named “Head On”) in 1998 and is also worth a look because, of course, it’s set in Melbourne!
