A ride on the Connex
Two things provoked my thoughts when I was on a Lilydale train yesterday:
- A label written “Pressing this button will activate the CCTV and emergency procedure” is placed next to the door. Does this make you feel safer? Or the fact the CCTV is not always on makes you feel less protected, or that your privacy isn’t inavaded?
- Also, Connex congratulated their riders on making “the smart choice” - travelling with Connex. Urgh. Your company’s over self-indulgence certainly helps.

The fact that the CCTV isn’t always on makes me wonder how useful it is, since it’s possible it would only be triggered after the event (assault for example).
I think you’ll be pleased to discover that the CCTV records all the time - it’s just that when the button is pressed the drivers’ attention is obtained because his display unit flickers to life with the feed from that camera so that he can ascertain the next step of action to be taken. It also opens an audio channel to the same driver display unit and stamps a timecode in the continuous recording so that the incident can be easily recalled later.
Hence, “pressing this button” does activate “emergency procedures”, but the cameras are still recording all the time.
Thats good to know. I think that should be more publicized.
