New Melbourne guide gettin’ bagged….
Ok, so we basically know that The Herald Sun does exaggerate a lot to get a ‘news scandal’ story. I dunno if that’s what it has done with the latest Lonely Planet Melbourne.
Apparently, the author, Simone Eggers (it’s just said that she ‘worked in Melbourne…for a decade’ - so she’s not a Melbournian) takes a swipe at a few Melbourne traditions. Such as our meat pies, Moomba, the boxing day test, and she calls us racists.
BUT - I read the excerpts in todays Sunday Sun, and it seems like Eggers is telling it like it is. It’s true - there is still racism in Melbourne, the packages meat pies you get at 7Eleven aren’t the best, and the floats in Moomba have never been award winning. That’s what makes a city a city though - it can’t all be AMAZING - and that’s what makes the great things about Melbourne stand out.
I guess I’ll have to flip through a copy of it at work and comment back here about if it really is a swipe at our city or not - but I’m leaning more towards the latter.

Re the racist part - most definitely true. It’s not overtly racist, but subtle stereotypes still hold true. This random Asian dude here has a hard time getting stuff done at times due to his perceived lack of communication skils, or the likes.

7-11 meat pies?? what is that all about? Is anything from 7-11 good other than their slurpees? Racism, sure of course but I wouldn’t say its as bad as Crounola.
Moomba Parade has definitely gone downhill. The best one was where they decorated all the trams. The latest ones have been pretty lame.
As for the moomba fest, its pretty good. Some rides and some fireworks but nothing amazing. Is this article online?

I do think that Melbourne is racist in areas. I’m Italian, and there is racism in my camp against Greeks. SO DUMB!

The Birdman Rally - people build a glider and launch themselves off a pontoon over the Yarra, trying to fly some distance (50m?) Some take it seriously, and others build very silly and whimsical aircraft, it’s all good. It was always the best thing about Moomba, glad they are bringing it back.

Birdman rocks!
My all time favourite was the year a guy made his wings out of those old skool macca clam shells - you know the SUPA environmentally unfriendly ones?
The texture of his wings was brilliant. He did his little run up and literally plonked straight into the Yarra.
Guess as a kid the thought of having to eat all those burgers to get that many shells was pretty ‘unreal banana peel’.
