Ride to Work Day

logo_rtwd2006_combined.jpgWhilst doing a little research on cycle-commuting, the healthy (if you take Neil’s very good advice and do a little defensive riding) and environmentally friendly alternative to getting around town, I discoved that we have a Ride to Work Day on the 4th of October.

Organised by Bicycle Victoria, Ride to Work Day is celebrating it’s 13th birthday.

If you sign up early, you get a special T-shirt and the chance to win a new bike.

The Victorian Farmers Federation will cook up a breakfast for you at Fed Square as well.

Not a bad deal all round, now I’ve just gotta get over my fear of riding around cars…..oh and get a bike.

After biking to work for about 13-years I was finally hit by a truck and taken down like an antelope. Remarkably, I only broke three ribs and had road rash all around. In any event, it’s been three weeks and I miss the bike sorely. This is most exposure I’ve had to traffic and gas prices and a relatively sedentary lifestyle in over a decade. I think that auto driver’s don’t really appreciate how much their transit choice represents a lifestyle choice. I have a resting heart rate of about 45bpm and bp well under 110/60. I can touch my toes and I don’t even stretch. I’m 35 and only weigh about 10 pounds more than when I was 20. Riding makes a world of difference in my general well-being as well. And I save up to $200/month in gas, parking, and maintenance. I get to work about 5-minutes faster by bike and home only 15-20-minutes slower. I have every intention of getting back on the bike. Never mind the environmental benefits.

Adam, thank you for sharing and thank goodness you are hale and hearty after your prang.

I am seriously considering migrating to cycle commuting after being told quite pointedly that my sedentary lifestyle is doing me no favours.

It angers me that despite the obvious long term benefits for people, let alone the environment on all counts, the powers that be insist on spending more on roads than on safer routes for cyclers.

    So much could be done!

I hope you recover soon Adam.
