Tram drivers
I found Yarra tram drivers are quite talented:
When it was near Christmas last year, I was on a tram the driver sang Santa Claus is coming to town to all the passengers via the PA system.
Yesterday, my roommate told me her tram driver introduces every single stop in the CBD in different ways with a different voice and tone, and he said ‘bye bye’ to passengers at every stop (with different voices and tone too!)
Do you have any funny experience with tram drivers?

I got on a tram a few weeks ago, possibly with your roommate’s tram driver. He was very zany and good value. When I first got on, he announced, ‘Everyone hold on. I am gonna roll this tram.’
hey, Alex. This is Janice’s roommate here. I think the tram driver you were talking about was the same driver that I met on that day. He said excatly what you heard the last time when I got on the tram!
The only experience I can relate is saying goodnight to the tram driver two stops from the depot on the last tram for the day. I was the only one on board at that time. The driver turned toward me replied in a friendly way. Before that I used to think that tram drivers were really quiet, always-minding-their-own-business sort of people who always looked straight out on the road and occasionally made announcements into the mic in a strict monotone!!
The guy you people are describing sounds really interesting… I hope to travel with him one day.
One of the things I like about riding a bus everyday is being able to greet the driver. And just about everyone thanks the driver when they get off too.
I have clear memories of a tram driver last year spontaneously breaking into Elvis Presley’s Are you Lonesome Tonight? over the P.A. I think I was only a few notches away from hysterical.
Oh, and did I not mention the whole tram applaused after the driver finish singing santa claus is coming to town?
personally i think these experience repairs the broken image of tram a little bit.
This one time, in band camp…
Ok i kid.
I’ve had 2 memorable experiences with the tram drivers.
Once, in tram 55 from the Royal Children’s Hospital to Brunswick, the driver began to describe the next stop in a flowery way. “The next stop is the Melbourne Hockey and Netball center. Alight if you wish to play ball.”
The next stop, he said, “The beautiful Melbourne Zoo! All the furry animals and overseas tourists, oh so much to see.”
Even the most straight-faced conservative couldn’t help but smile.
The second experience, in tram 19 from Coburg to the CBD, the driver sang the name of every stop in a different pitch. Nobody knew what to think. It was hilarious.
I wonder if the drivers have been instructed to perform theatrics like these. I can’t say i hate them though!
On the 79 tram down Chapel Street, the driver goes “Anyone wanna get higggggh? High Street”
I had a singing one the other night heading from Melbourne Uni to Melbourne Central station along Swanston.
It was grand. He made the whole tram smile.
