National Service…LOL…oh puhleeez…
So Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has introduced a radical recruitment drive to populate shrinking Australian defence force. I don’t know about you, but i couldn’t help chucking to myself after reading the article.
In January this year, i’d written a lengthy post on my blog on the merits and demerit of National Service from my experience with the Singapore Armed Forces.
It’s been 9 months, and my opinions hasn’t changed. Australia needs a serious rethink of the way her young citizens are growing up. I’m not for National Service completely, but if conscription is passed, Australian youth-oriented problems such as drugs, school drop outs, wayward lifestyles and sickening immaturity would be reduced drastically.
Taking a year off to travel and party? Completely unheard of in countries with conscription. I’d like to see Australian males bracing themselves for a year or two of military life the moment they complete Year 12. Now that’s mateship.
Someone tell Johnny Howard that.

Sounds good but a government that forces you to do military service is not a country that I choose to be in. Perhaps we can assign military service for people who get in trouble with the law(eg. Cronoula idiots).
“Wayward lifestyles” and “sickening immaturity”? Got anymore extremely vague terms you’d like to throw in there?
You may not see taking a year off to travel and party as a productive use of time, but others might disagree, and they shouldn’t be prevented from living their life based on their own priorities.
Why do you only want Australian males undertaking military service? Where are the females to go in your exciting regime? Finishing school then a kitchen somewhere?
‘Xcept for us defective female epileptics-woo hoo!!
You geaux get shot.

Is this not the year 2006? You can’t introduce military service for just males! In this day and age, you can’t make blanket statements like that. Not to mention implying that all school leavers are immature and need a slap around the ear by the military. I think the government’s move to encourage more school leavers to engage in something bigger than themselves is a step in the right direction. Who knows, these “immature” people leaving school may fight for our country some day.
Ah ha,I think I see what Adrock is getting at. Introduce mandatory National service for Australia males thus taking out a good portion of the male population. This leaves many young single girls for international students. Genius!
Haha! What are you on about Neil? 99% of international students are too Asian or introverted to date the local girls here. Besides, most white Aussie girls will never date an Asian. Asian males, like raw fish, are an acquired taste.
On the males doing military service part, i guess i was generalising a tad bit. Females are more than welcome to be conscripted, although i can’t see them handling the physical rigours of army life. They’re excellent as perhaps civil officers who co-ordinate the activities between the army and the community. And also, a female in a male-dominated army will undoubtedly raise a few unneccessary distractions.
And Joel, perhaps you’d like to reread my post, or my blog post. I absolutely abhore a lengthy national service; the basic military training is fine, but anything else is way too much. I more than support taking a year off to travel. Everyone is entitled to live his or her own life. Nobody should be subjected to compulsory military training.
Which is why i left Singapore in the first place. I could say more but i’d get sued. So i’ll stop now.
:O
“Asian males, like raw fish, are an acquired taste.”
Thats the greatest line ever. haha.
Actually, I was referring to the U.S, English, Misc. European males. Being a U.S. international student here a couple of years ago, the pickings were great. Fortunately, the Aussie male makes males from any other cultures look good.
What is “Perfect Health” considered to be by the Australian government?
This is serious, when I tried to fill out my
application for the “Crocodile Hunter” Challenge
thingy they refused to answer this exact question.

You have a good point.
What is good health to the government?
What is good health for the Army?
knowing they are 2 different things.
Shouldn’t the first people to make the gesture of ’servie’, if it is to come in be our countries leaders - see how serious they are then.
George Bush wouldn’t meet minimum standards.
