Racing down Lygon Street
There was more racing than the Melbourne Cup this long weekend. I had the great experience of witnessing a car accident while having a beer on Lygon Street. Fortunately, I had my camera on hand and took some pictures of the aftermath. Now, I would never take pictures of a car accident for no reason especially if anyone was hurt. In this case, no one was hurt (other than their egos).
Lygon Street, although not anywhere as bad as Chapel St., is notorious for P platers (or other miscellaneous hoons) driving up and down Lygon St. in small intervals of fast speeds. It was just a matter of time before an accident happened. Well, as I was enjoying my beer, I hear an engine rev, then some crunching noises. A full car of no older than 18-year-old guys dressed like wannabe Italian/Greek gangsters come out and mull around the car. At points, it looked like there was going to be a fight amongst each other. Imagine that “V” commercial with the bugs in the can, “Yo you dinged my ride”.
So of course, the idiots, other than causing a traffic bottleneck, start crossing back and forth across the road. One of their friends decides that it is a good idea to block more traffic and pulls in front of the crashed car.
Now, take note that the police station is 2 blocks away so there should have been a police car there in maybe a couple of minutes right? Nope, 20 minutes for 1 police motorcycle to show up, 30 minutes for the rest of the cavalry and an ambulance to show up.
It’s quite satisfying when everyone on the street is united in the same thought “Look at these idiots”. Its a great feeling. All in all, a bit of free entertainment and probably the biggest thing to happen on Lygon St in a while.
