Melbourne named sports capital.
I think it is totally ironic this I live in the sports capital of the world. I hate the thing, think most sports people are idiots who can’t handle fists, drink and sex drives, and that Australia (and the world) is too wrapped up in brawn instead of brain (which, to me, the latter is much sexier and more interesting).
I think it’s also extremely ironic that I am announcing this –
Melbourne has been voted the top sporting capital of the world. This conclusion was made by Arksports, a research firm that looks after NFL and Visa and are based in London.
Paris and Sydney came in second.
We won because we scored highly in level of public interest in sport, our facilities, number of major events won and how much the government supports sport (which, lets face it – we probably got full points on!).
These results are apparently going to give us a boost in tourism, and up our chances of staging other sporting events (such as the World Cup).
In other areas, we came in second in quality of life (Vancouver won) accommodation (New York) – the only section we scored badly in was in transportation.
I love my city – but geez, why does it have to punish me so?
