On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me……

metropolis.JPGI love books…..as much as I love my laptop – reading/browsing a screen will never replace the joy of opening a beautiful book.

And as much as I love books – I can’t STAND “super” book stores.

There’s just something about the rows and rows of pulp that chills me.

Give me a hole in the wall dusty store – piled high with 2nd handers (you can find amazing publications if you’re up for the hunt) or a carefully curated independent filled with crisp and clever volumes any day.

One of my absolute favs is Metropolis.

These guys used to be on Acland St, St Kilda way back when St Kilda was belle of the bay.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love the area but it’s just not quite the same anymore – the departure of Metropolis, its replacement a “mega” chemist, heralded a new era for the area.

more after the jump

Metropolis is a treasure trove for anyone interested in the creative arts – be that graphic design, architecture, photography, fashion and textiles, pop culture, film, music and performance.

Handpicked by the savvy – it’s just one of those places that makes you salivate…..well, I do anyway.

The guys there are amazing, they know what they’re on about and they’ll guide you to the best local or off shore publication. And if you can’t find that book on that obscure architect your Uncle Jim likes to mumble about, they’ll find and order it in for you. Heaven!

Certainly not to be disregarded is their music selection – thousands of titles…..homegrown and from afar – you name the genre and yeah – they probably have it.

Actually, I’m pretty sure 90% of my own collection originated from there.

So, whilst you’re on your mad X’mas pressie hunt – pop in for a visual and aural feast……you’ll probably end up picking up something for yourself as well.

Then you can do what I do after a browse, and drink a cleansing ale downstairs at Cookie.

mmmmm I love a good second hand book store, the musty smell, books jammed from floor to roof. Treasures just waiting to be found.

@janice, yeah – readings is another one that I love too. They Cosmos on Acland street and didn’t change a thing – perfect! Chronicles on Fitzroy and the Brunswick Street Bookstore (which I think Zara might work at) are up there on the list too.

Anyone got any other independents they rate highly?

@bjorn, the Bookhouse on Fitzroy next to the Blue Danube is fantastic – not quite dusty and musty but full of 2ndhanders that are snapped up quick smart. He used to be in Elwood…when he first started.

There’s dusty musty gem – with resident cats too! – on Chapel, just near the Windsor station. Husband and wife team – think they’ve got a sister store in Box Hill, Whitehorse road. Literally piled high, stack upon stack….fertile hunting grounds – jenga style.
