Babes plus Bikinis plus Booze = ?

How could I not comment on this?

Management and promoters of the Amber Lounge have a received a right royal rap over the knuckles by officials and public for their planned Christmas Bikini Party which was scheduled for the 22nd of December.

Gals who rocked up in Bikinis were to receive free entry; free cloakroom (cause you would wear something over it right?!?); free juicy tube (?!?!) AND unlimited FREE alcohol, ALL night.

Like watching a trainwreck……..
more after the jump

Management and the promoter, WTF Productions, better known for their asian nights, were hauled up by Victoria Police and the Director of Liquor Licensing, Sue Maclellan with a little refresher course on the Responsible Serving of Alcohol.

Coincidently, the Chief Commissioner was the first woman in Australia to hold the position and the Director was the first woman in Victoria to be appointed head of Liquor Licensing.

Management and Promoter decided it was in their best interest to dump the party……….duh!

Now it’s a Hawaiian Summer Party Night with two free bevs for boys and gals alike – very creative….

Gotta love the comments in the article from officials,

“To drink excessively while wearing the equivalent of underwear exposes women to many risks, including almost certain sexual assault,” Mr Munro said today.

“It is exploiting women by offering them as bait as it is inevitable many will become very drunk and vulnerable.”

So women are more likely to get raped dressing in beachwear. Interesting. Hmmm..sounds similar to comments made by a certain Sheikh Hilali’s “uncovered meat”.

Another sensationalistic news story. Been to plenty of all you can drink places. Rarely have I ever seen someone drunk been turned down a drink unless they are acting violently.

What would happen if this were on a beach, or it was a beach bar?

Right…The Amber Lounge. Seriously folks, have you actually checked the place out? A desperate attempt to get things rockin I reckon. Posted by: Benji of Sth Yarra 3:48pm December 19, 2006

HA HA! Mission accomplished! With so much free advertising they can now back down, take a breath and count all the money. I guess we are all a little naive……. Posted by: William of Melbourne 3:51pm December 19, 2006

My name is Tara and I just turned 18. Yes girls get raped and we’ve been getting raped since the days of cavemen. Now i’m going to be attending this event in my bikini no matter what anybody says. I will be attending with girlz and guyz and i’m gonna have a ball…!! If you’re not coming to this place then you should really be quiet. You see, it’s our choice and if people make mistakes, they learn from them. It’s all life experience. I trust myself and i know my limits. There may be freaks there but i know for a fact that there will be a whole lot of really responsible young men as well. It’s a party sexual things happen anyway. People kissing and rubbing bodies together in corners is what happens and people are free to do so. Now im sure that if everybody who has posted a comment was approaced by a really nice and attractive person of the opposite sex, they wouldn’t mind getting to know them. So you do your thing on Friday night, and we’ll do ours. And people like Con can look all they like… doen’t mean he can have me. And if he does touch me he will have a lot of angry people to deal with so i guess what goes around, comes around. Posted by: Amy D. of Melbourne 10:58am December 19, 2006

There are a few things that bother me about this – and no, I’m not a cardi wearing conservative….though I am wearing a nice little cardi from Scanlan & Theodore today (does that count?)

Firstly, the conduct of the management & promoters – sure they want to make the bucks – host a good bash and generally speaking – I mean generally, the gals aren’t wearing that much anyway right?

Sex sells; why not lubricate it with a bit of free booze. The gals will probably be a little friendlier and the guys will come through the door…..paying for their entry and of course for their drinks.

I’m assuming that people aren’t thick, and they are aware – gals that is – that events such as this plays on self esteem issues. I’ve got no problem with people turning up in anything – really, wear what you like – it is your choice.

True confidence is a great thing – if you have it, brilliant – the world is truly your oyster; chutzpah that comes from a bottle of booze plus some is another thing. And it’s those that rely on the chutzpah that concerns me.

Goes for both guys and gals really…..

Neil is right, there are heaps of establishments and events that do the ‘all you can drink’. From uni functions during green week, openings to special “NYE” parties – and pretty much most of Melbourne’s major events a la Melbourne Cup, Grand Prix et al.

It’s not the actual serving of a drink to a drunk person that has alarm bells clanging, it’s what that inebriated person might do (again gal or guy) to themselves or more importantly others afterwards….especially if they are one of those with no “off switch” [that’s an AA term]

We’re heading straight into the festive binge-drinking season…..take a little care out there.
