Curiouser and curiouser…

Due to family and some business commitments, I was pulled away from Melbourne to the island city of Singapore last weekend.

I don’t find myself pounding the streets as much as i would like though. As i write, it’s pouring outside. In fact, it has been raining non stop for over 72 hours. The monsoon season, which afflicts the region for much of December, has taken himself too seriously this year and has done little to hurt his reputation with incessant rain. God knows what the Rain God is doing up in the clouds; his bladder can’t be that full!? And just when we think he’s done with the peeing, he jiggles the excess pee.

Liangcai, of Singapore Metroblogs, has encapsulated the current overdose of water perfectly in his post here.
It has been 32 years since Singapore has seen so much rain over a 3-day period in December. However, however modern Singapore is, there’ll always be some regions - particularly the low lying areas - that’re flood prone.

I was shopping in the Little India district yesterday afternoon (with the unbrella no less!) and several of her tiny alleyways were bursting with water. I found myself wading through the alleys with rain water that came knee-deep, and i’m 180cm tall. Imagine what it’s like for the average Singaporean male and female, who’re typically shorter. It’s not very charming indeed.

I can’t help but notice the contrast between Singapore and Melbourne, rain-wise. If only Melbourne and her country regions have just a tenth of what Singapore is experiencing, we’d not be in the almost dire water situation all Victorians find themselves in right now.

God bless Victorians, and let’s do the rain dance shall we?

:O

I heard something the other day that Singapore has a similar situation to whats happening in Melbourne now. Farmers in one of the neighbouring countries set fires (burning off old crops or something) and the smoke gets blown over to Singapore which make it quite smoggy/smokey.

Wish we had that weather here.

Aye, I’m back in Singapore now for family stuff too, and good gawd; the rain!!! I’m lucky to be in a non-flooded area in the 20 hour downpour yesterday, but it sure dampened (pun intended) the mood to do anything other than catching some Zs.

Neil, that’s the haze we’ve got in Singapore. Farmers in areas in and around Sumatra practise the slash & burn method of farming. Unfortunately, people there are deeply rooted in their traditional ways, so intervention by governments and health groups haven’t really had an impact.
