Speed dating at the library

speeddatingbook.jpgAre you single and like to read books? The State Library of Victoria on Swanston Street has introduced a speed dating program for lovers of classic texts. Each person brings a book they like and a book they hate. This is the ice breaker for the 5 minute speed dates. The first time it was tried, it sold out with 52 people participating.

Text Appeal: Literary Dating!
Looking for love this summer? Bring a favourite book to the Library, and try a new angle on dating. A book you love or loathe will get the story started. Austen meets Kerouac, Rushdie falls for Zadie and JK Rowling can probably take her pick… Who will you find?
Time: Wed 17 and Wed 31 January, 7-9.30pm
Venue: Experimedia
Bookings: 03 8664 7555 or learning@slv.vic.gov.au
Cost: $20 per session (three for the price of two, drinks and entertainment included)

Seems like a great way to meet people. Has anyone tried speed dating?

I don’t think i’ll make a really good impression on the lady if i start off with my favourite book/s:

    1) Fighting Fantasy adventure books
    2) Dungeon and Dragons/Forgotten Realms books
    3) Medical thrillers by Robin Cook
    4) Spanish for Dummies
    5) Essential Spiderman/Fantastic Four/Avengers/X-Men by Marvel Comics

What’re the chances that i’ll find a geeky partner? :O

Hum, well, I’ve got 117 books in my LibraryThing catalogue that I’ve rated 5 out 5, so I wouldn’t know which one to take! Anyway, I also have 373 unread books, so I should really stay home and read instead.

    Erm …

I remember reading a girl’s journal on SuicideGirls.com — she’s from Melbourne — & she wrote about doing this. Apparently it was painful because the males were so disappointing. I bet all the hot indie boys are kicking themselves that they didn’t trot along when an SG was there.

LOL Brett…you’re funny. Why don’t you bring your books down and we can meet and be merry and get drunk on unread books…

On the subject on suicidal girls, has anyone gone out with anyone with suicidal tendencies? I know i haven’t…

Adrock (post 1) and Brett… you’re comments were very funny guys!! Probably the funniest I’ve ever come across on MB. LOL…!

I have ‘The exorcist’ unread in my book shelf for the past 10 months. Can I join…?

    Cheers!

Hehe thanks. We only aim to please.

As for ‘The Exorcist’, i don’t know. Just thinking of a 360 degree head-spinning Linda Blair, crawling backwards down a flight of stairs while spewing green bile at your face gives me the jitters. No chance i’ll sit through 5 minutes with anyone. Period.

Btw, why do you have the book? The movie (director’s cut) is so much better. Some things are better visualised in a movie.

    Awwwe….!

Anyway, I saw the film when I was little… only remembered bits of it (the head-spin for the most part) years later when I chanced upon the book in a second-hand book store. It was dusty and pages had truned yellowish. It was an archeological discovery. I just had to buy it.
