Where is the comet in that photo?
Looks like it has been chopped off, it’s there in my RSS reader (just off the right edge). I think it’s been too cloudy to see from Melbourne :(
The discoverer, Rob McNaught, is an Australian (or works here, anyway). He’s discovered hundreds of asteroids and about a dozen comets. I briefly worked at the same observatory as him a long time ago, but I doubt he would remember me!
All fixed now ;)
ah, beautiful. cheers.
Hey guys im pretty sure i saw this comet tonight 22/7/07.
I was sitting inside with my gf and i went out for a smoke. I thought a comet would be visibly moving through the sky? But this one was just sitting there hardly moving to the naked eye, and you could see the trail.
If anyone else saw ot contact me on http://www.myspace.com/djrefrakt
Does anyone know the name or classifation of this thing?
im in the sth east of melbourne and when in scoresby i saw the comet with a trail heading south.
It was a great view and easier to spot than when haleys came past about 10 yr ago.
hi i saw the commet from my front yard in geelong last night, very clear view in the southern sky. it was visible for over an hour easily. it was beautiful.
I saw the commet last night! Amazing.
hey will i still be able to see it tonight? if so what time?
For tonight, 23/1
Go out around 9:30, and look towards the southwest.
The comet has been visible from Ballarat over the last 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday). Its bright enough to see with surrounding street lighting.
Look to the South, about 9:40pm, it gets better from then until about 10:30pm.
Well tonight is the 25th Jan 2007 and the comet is still visible in the night sky to the southeast from Clayton. Walking down the street I saw it for the first time tonight… cool!
sorry southwest :P
Great photo but check out the photo I found at flickr

Very cool picture. Looks like artwork.
I took a few images of the comet in Mt Donna Buang & Torquay but unfortunately I didn’t manage to take one with Melbourne city skyline, as I thought it wasn’t bright enough to compete with the bright lights from the city even on the first visible day (22 Jan) for Melbourne.
But anyway I found one photo here with Melbourne city skyline, although the comet is faint in the photo:
