Moomba & Birdman Rally

As I write this, the Moomba festivities are wrapping up with the last series of fireworks. The Jetstar Birdman Rally is definitely one of Melbourne’s unique events to watch. For those who don’t know, the rally is a competion to see how far a person can glide (or fall) off a platform using homemade gliding apparatuses. Some people just choose to use a costume which at this weekend’s rally seemed to work the best as the wind was blowing towards the contestants.

  • Its hard to hear people on a PA system as it is, but John So is very difficult to understand. As he was one of three judges, they chose him to read the score after each person jumped and to make a comment.
  • James Mathison (Australian Idol Host)Frank Woodley, of Lano and Woodley, did a good job hosting the event except that he repeated the same “He’s O-K, he’s O-K” phrase.
  • I’m not sure if they reduced the height of the platform this year but in previous years it was double the height. Perhaps someone got hurt in the past?
  • The three judges were on a big boat that obstructed the view of the platform for a good portion of the audience.
  • A good selection of contestants including “Mr. Moomba” who looked like Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons. Unsuprisingly, he dropped like a lead weight.
  • There were some great handgliders but most had the problem of falling backwards due to winds and weight distribution.
  • I got sunburn.

    Haha…awww poor Neil.

Yeah it’s always a visual treat mocking and laughing at the silly contraptions and outfits these people have on themselves.

As for John So, don’t get me started on him….

I went along on Saturday to have a look. I thought it was a total yawnfest! Never again!

I don’t think it was James Mathieson – try Frank Woodley from Lano and Woodley.

And I got sunburnt too. Woot.

Thanks Mare. Yes, it appears that is was Frank Woodley. They do look strikingly similar from 50 meters away.

I think some girls passing by mentioned it was James from Australian Idol and no one disagreed. He did a fairly good job anyway other than repeating the same phrase 20 times.
