Swanston / La Trobe Street Traffic Light

Located in the southbound lane of Swanston Street, on the corner of La Trobe street is this somewhat confusing traffic light.

  • Between 7AM-7PM, you can not drive a vehicle on Swanston street (between La Trobe & Flinders St) unless you are a taxi.
  • Thus, you can only turn left or right.
  • But, unlike other streets with tramlines, this particular southbound intersection does not require a hook turn.
  • I believe the 3rd traffic light is for trams.
  • The top two traffic lights are for bicyclists.

Hook turns and traffic lights such as these have hopefully helped prevent some surburbaners, tourists, and country folk from driving into the city.

The first time I saw that light, I stared in awe and went, “……”, before someone blared his horn at me from behind.

Now, the funny thing is I wasn’t even driving, and someone was getting the attention of the car in front of him, driven by someone who was probably also in shock. Apparently it happens often in that junction.

Anyway, your favourite Melburnian not-so-fatty-anymore is back on the Biggest Loser. He tried to do the admirable thing in last night’s temptation by giving up his place to fellow contestant Greg, who got removed from the game from a bad stroke of ill luck.
