Where, oh, where?

This is such a selfish post, but it might benefit everyone (or at least anyone who has to see me on a consistent basis).

I need a haircut. Badly. I am also cheap. And I thought - what better way to abuse my Metroblogging privileges than to request advice from readers on a completely personal matter?

So here it is: Where can I get a good cut for a reasonable price (say, under $30-40)? More to the point - where shouldn’t I go? I’ve had more than one hatchet job in my lifetime, and am not looking to repeat the experience to save a few bucks.

Speak from the depths of your experience, Melbourne. And your follicles. Maybe we can all look more stylish this winter. Or in my case, less like some kind of rabid animal.

Update I: Neil’s posted a good place in the comments. But seems kind of designed for boys. I’m not after a glass of champagne (a Coopers sounds great), but I think I’ll take a pass on the clipper cut. What do we have for the ladies?

$15-$22 for a haircut and a beer. My friend swears by it.

That does sound like a good deal (though I worry about the thought of hair clippings becoming part of the “natural sediment” in my Coopers).

That looks like more of a barber shop, though. I’m going for something a little, but not a lot, girlier.

    MINK…

I dont know if thats good or not, but I know they have lots of lil shops all over melbourne. And if you email your address to them, you’ll get a 50% discount card (at least that was how I got mine, tho Ive never used it yet), which means you can spend only 20 bucks for the haircut which should be 40.

I recommend Kairos along Swanston Street. Its within the $30 - $40 price range and they do a really good job (both for me and all my friends who’ve tried them).

My serious recommendation, if you are in Carlton, is Shine Salon (9663 6114), Pelham St (corner of Lygon), across from the Italian Piazza park (or whatever its called), Milan restaurant, and Lemongrass restaurant. If you go, mention my name.

I must add I have had a couple of male and a couple of female friends go there and all were satisfied. You do receive a glass of wine as well but no beer.

Have you tried the haircutting schools?

Biba Salon runs two (www.biba.com.au). Cuts are $25, visit the website and click on Models for more info.

Another salon that has a school is Edward Beale (www.edwardbeale.com.au/).

    Good luck!
