Mad Monday
Mad Monday refers to the first Monday after the end of the regular season in AFL. It’s traditionally a time for the teams who don’t make the top 8 to drink (or drug) their heads off.
Let me just start off by saying I barrack for Carlton. On occasion I go for a $6 parma and $3 pint at Pugg Mahones (Puggs) in the city. Monday night is generally backpacker and student night (or anyone else who wants a cheap night). Well, what a surprise when I walk in and see half of the team in the pub.
Everyone gives The Blues and their supporters crap and rightly so. We only missed the wooden spoon by one game this year which would have made it three years in a row. I don’t think they deserve to party it up. Are we celebrating how crap we played? The fact that we lost 11 games in a row?
No one would be stupid enough to tell them all of this in a pub but I have never seen a room full of guys be so star struck in my life. Groups of guys were going up to them and kissing their asses. Even the security and staff let the players do whatever they want which wasn’t too crazy (throwing ice, water guns etc.) but not something they would let Jo Smo off the street do without kicking them out.
Other than that, they all seamed very friendly and very young. Lance Whitnall was the oldest (28) and I’m surprised Bryce Gibbs (18) wasn’t asked for ID. No Fev or Kouta around. Some drank Bacardi Breezer type drinks which was a bit funny but most were drinking spirits.
So collectively, this is my third celebrity sighting in Melbourne this year. Although this one was cool, nothing beats Jessica Alba.

So … did you happen to notice if any of them seemed unusually animated? Would you say their pupils were dilated? Maybe some grinding of the jaws? Lots of sniffing in the dunnies?
From a safety point of view, it helps if we can build up a picture of where they’re going and what they’re getting up to.
Hey, They aren’t Hawthorn!
No obvious signs of drug use and the dunnies are too small and intimate (not to mention filthy) for groups of guys to do lines in the bathroom. I didn’t see anyone just drinking water.
All in all, they were a nice bunch. One accidently tapped me in the head with his water gun and he was very apologetic. Given they are so young, I don’t think the fame has gone to their head. I mean, they were drinking at Puggs and theres not many places cheaper than that.
BTW, love the blog and the graphic Greg.
I’m a Carlton follower, too. These days it’s embarrassing to admit that, like being a Fitzroy follower used to be. Sounds like an interesting night at Pugg’s anyway.
