As Kevin Sheedy would say it…
Was channel surfing free-to-air tele earlier, and caught about 10 seconds of the footy between West Coast Eagles and Collingwood. The commentator commented on how the semi finals (or perhaps footy?) is the greatest sporting spectacle in the world.
Seriously, get a life.
Speaking of sports and telelvision, free-to-air never got any duller what with footy on Seven, cricket on Nine and rugby world cup on Ten.
I know it’s all about money, but the networks aren’t doing football a favour by showing them exclusively on Foxtel. The A-League deserves a chance. It is afterall, what people with a life really watch.

Arguably, the people with lives aren’t home to watch the telly. :)
“The A-League deserves a chance. It is afterall, what people with a life really watch.”
You’re a peanut.
This blog has really gone down the toilet. unsubscribed :(
Actually Darren you do have a point. Who watches free-to-air tele these days? What with the proliferation of sexy tv on Foxtel.
And I like peanuts; they’re tasty and a good snack but I don’t know the resemblance goes as far as looks are concerned.
I’m biased yes, but it’s just a little sad to see Australians aren’t open to a more world-weary view. Unsubscribed :)
wow, this is horrible flamebait if i’d ever seen it.
and uh, who gives a damn if anything is what “people with a life” watches?
i had a super late one last night working, and i was pretty stoked that i got to watch the football, flick over to see au dominate the 20/20, and then tune into some rugby o finish off the evening.
could there have been better programming? sure. but soccer sure wouldn’t have made the list. as a game, it’s not a very good “sporting spectacle”. as an event, though? the soccer world cup (as in, the environment, the atmosphere, the passion) is worth the ‘experience’. the game itself is (often) as boring as paint drying. but that’s only my opinion. and according to the networks, i’m lucky because i’m in the majority (well, i can only assume so, given the programming schedule).
You know what I always thought strange? Your ‘cousins’ in the motherland are obsessed about the one true game that 90% of the world follows, yet Aussies are so insulated and ostracized from the rest of the world and chooses to follow a game that frankly, has no depth in strategy, tactics or skill.
Guus Hiddink made an awesome comment last year when he commented how he doesn’t understand what the fascination is over a game that you catch with your hand. His facial expressions and gesticulations were spot on. Footy will never die, but it will be dwarfed by football eventually.
That’s not to say that both games cannot co-exist together. They can, but players with real skill - and those who really want to call themselves a real athelete - will pit their ball skills against players around the world. Not your neighbourhood suburb.
“frankly, has no depth in strategy, tactics or skill.”
Wow. That could possibly be the most uninformed dribble I’ve read all week. Have you ever played Aussie Rules? Or are you so “insulated and ostracized” that you never gave it a shot? Or perhaps the other boys in school never picked you to play with them?
“Your ‘cousins’ in the motherland are obsessed about the one true game that 90% of the world follows, yet Aussies are so insulated and ostracized from the rest of the world”
The fact that you actually consider this to be a worthwhile argument is pretty hilarious. Would you prefer some sort of sporting hegemony? Perhaps you should tell some All Blacks fans that they’re insulated and ignorant because of their love of rugby.
Isn’t this blog meant to be about Melbourne?
Isn’t this blog supposed to be about this beautiful city of ours and what makes it so great? AFL is clearly entrenched in our Melbourne culture and cleary the sport favoured by most Melbournians. So what if AFL isn’t a ‘world game’? NFL isn’t either but the americans are infatuated with it. It is part of their history and culture and thus, it is what makes them unique. I don’t see how denigrating AFL, its players and supporters do any good for anyone. Sport is sport, you follow the sports you enjoy playing or watching and leave others to follow the sports they find enjoyable. Maybe we should inform rowers, archers and golfers that their sport is inferior and not worth playing because not ‘90% of the world’ follow those sports. Respect the Aussie culture, you dickhead.
adrock2xander is a import that doesnt understand the game, or this country. thats why he bags it out, like every other post he stamps on here. his penis is obviously small. thats why he acts as the “big man” online. OH XANDAR… HARDER PLEASE!!!! WE LOVE YOU! YOU ARE MELBOURNE!
Oh I’m completely accepting of footy. I was just peeved that free-to-air tele doesn’t give football more respect than it deserves. That was highlighted in my post. Melbourne-related blog, check.
Of course, someone took offense to my post and compared me to a legume. And then some. Funny :O
“Respect the Aussie culture, you dickhead.”
haha..That’s by far the best quote ever.
By the way, they had the Australian womens soccer game on SBS tonight.
Last night watched footy then cricket.
Watched footy, soccer, then rugby tonight.
There is a plethora of sports on FTA TV including your soccer.
You’re also forgetting that SBS do have lots of soccer/football coverage.
They’ve got a whole website dedicated to it -> http://www.theworldgame.com.au
Here’s two relevant articles:
http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/60228,new-foxtel-deal-for-oz-footy.aspx
“PAY-TV firm Foxtel has signed on as a marquee partner with the FFA in a multi-million dollar, three year deal.”
http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/60148,ten-eyes-aleague-tv-deal.aspx
“Channel Ten says covering the A-League in the future “is not out of the question” as it gears up to broadcast the glamour friendly between Sydney FC and LA Galaxy.”
You’d think one of the main reasons why the FFA signed an initial long term deal (when the A-League started) with Fox Sports is to lock in a steady cash flow with decent Austraila-wide coverage of the game. So at the time, it was the right thing for the FFA to do.
It would have been a big gamble for any FTA station to have done a similar sort of deal with the A-League at the time of its’ inception. It’s not to say that the A-League will not be on FTA in the future though. They (the FTA stations) will have watched on with interest the attendance levels at the games, as well as media interest.
In my mind though, the only way for any FTA station to broadcast matches in the future would be through additional channels. Such as those being planned for Channels 7 & 10 as HD channels.

“Speaking of sports and telelvision, free-to-air never got any duller what with footy on Seven, cricket on Nine and rugby world cup on Ten.”
I have always felt that way… sports fans are treated like royalty on free-to-air television. It all seems to be programmed to cater to them.
I mean, when you really think about it, isn’t it a bit stupid that a full third of the average news program on one of the commercial networks is devoted to sports scores? Since when was that actually “news”? They don’t do reports on the latest developments on Neighbours! (though i wouldn’t put it past them as something to look forward to…)
It’s one of the main incentives for getting pay TV. Which is a shame.
“Isn’t this blog supposed to be about this beautiful city of ours and what makes it so great? AFL is clearly entrenched in our Melbourne culture and cleary the sport favoured by most Melbournians.”
That’s funny. Last time i checked, Adrock was a Melbournian too. And hey, so am I.

But obviously adrock2xander and dissembly are of minority and not “most melburnians” otherwise all the tv staions would stop showing sports on tv!
Actually, the spelling is Melburnian. :O
Or have you guys not been reading my previous thread hehe?
“But obviously adrock2xander and dissembly are of minority and not “most melburnians” ”
Yarrr, but me point was that minority opinions are just as valuable as any others. Twice the dubloons, perrrhaps. We both be MelbUrrrrnians, and we have nae any reason tah pretend we likes yar ‘Foot Ball’, nae shall we let it be in peace, just because our scurvy neighbours do partake in it.
“Actually, the spelling is Melburnian.”
That missin’ ‘o’ haunts me still… yar, it be waitin’ fer us a somewheres.
