Experiences in the emergency department
Over the past couple of weeks, there has been several reports in the news regarding our emergency departments in the hospitals around Australia. One of the latest tragedies occurred in North Shore Hospital in Sydney where a woman had a miscarriage in the toilets of the emergency department. The miscarriage could not have been prevented but help could have been provided to the woman before the tragedy.
My personal experience of the services provided in the emergency department had been both efficient and professional. I was treated quickly after the initial paperwork, (I’ve always wondered why they require information about your personal details, medicare and private insurance details. I mean, do they plan NOT to treat you otherwise and leave you to die without those information?)
A report into our emergency departments showed that Victoria’s hospitals are performing better than those in other states but that is no comfort for someone waiting in pain for hours. My wait wasn’t long, maybe, because the tirage nurse determined that I required immediate attention and it was a weeknight, and there wasn’t a lot of patients. I supposed if there were more clinics open 24 hours or late into the night, then there may be less people going to the emergency department for treatment. But, that is just my guess.
I have yet to find medical centres that are opened late into the nights. Does anyone know of any?
What was your experience with Victoria’s emergency department?

You would have been a very fortunate one. I have been to the emergency and its been extremely painfull. The head nurse at the counter smiles and looks at your injury and says its not too bad. have a seat and we’ll call you. Step away from the window counter ..
And then i waited in agony until someone comes to get you..that too not any time soon. I have heard some emergency depts have only one doctor on duty during the night ?
I have stayed in 3rd world countries where you can get more than one doctor any time you need. Immediate action..
The emergency departments here need much more staff.
Do we need another miscarriage in the bathroom before someone starts considering it !

I went just month to the Alfred’s ER, to get stitches in my forehead after a soccer injury.
I was damn impressed, I have to say. I was in and out in under an hour. All covered by Medicare too.
Maybe I’m just impressed because I grew up in the US, and have experienced four-hour-plus waits there…
