Happy Melbourne Day
This Sunday, 174 years ago, Melbourne was founded. What better way then to celebrate Melbourne by visiting some of it’s attractions on the cheap. Although the deals are not as sweet as previous years, a 2 for 1 deal is a good excuse to take a look at some of the attractions you have been meaning to see.
2 for 1 offers on the following:
Melbourne Aquarium
Eureka Skydeck
Melbourne River Cruises
Old Melbourne Gaol
Australian Racing Museum
Australian Centre for the Moving Image
Chinese Museum Bridge of Memories Exhibition
City Museum at Old Treasury Melbourne
Cooks’ Cottage
Melbourne Golden Mile Guided Walk
Melbourne Aquarium
Old Melbourne Gaol
50% off:
Queen Victoria Market Tour
Rialto Tower Observation Deck
and a free swim at the City Baths. I would guess the deals this year aren’t as good previous years because Melbourne Day falls on a Sunday this year, assumingly the busiest day for most of these attractions. Maybe going next year on a Monday might mean less crowds and better deals.

This Saturday marks the 173rd anniversary of the city of Melbourne. Melbourne Day sets up opportunities for people to experience all that Melbourne has to offer on the cheap. There are various free events during the day including John So raising the flag of Melbourne, a rifle volley, and some live bands. The best thing about Melbourne Day though is the discounts on many attractions around Melbourne. If you haven’t seen the Eureka Tower, here is your chance to see it for half price (Buy 1 Get 1 Free).
Other deals:
FREE ENTRY – Enterprize, Melbourne’s Tallest Ship
2 FOR 1 ENTRY – City Museum at Old Treasury Melbourne
2 FOR 1 ENTRY – Champions – Australian Racing Museum

I managed to go up to the top of the Eureka Tower last Thursday for Melbourne Day. As mentioned before, they were running a 2 for 1 ticket promotion on the day.
If you go to the Eureka Tower, here are a few points.
- If you want to take good pictures, you must go during the day. There are all kinds of lights inside which cast glares on the glass windows. Fine for viewing by eyes but terrible with a camera.
- It is not highly obvious or advertised but there is a door to the outside where you are free to take pictures or stand and gaze. It is next to the entrance of “The Edge”.
- I haven’t experienced “The Edge” but it seems like a waste of $12. The Edge consists of being locked in a glass box that is extended out of the building. You have maybe all of 4 minutes to look around before the box retracts back into the building.
- Don’t expect to get a proper meal. There is a little cafe but the selection of food is mostly what you can get at 7-11. Instead, go to nearby Southbank for coffee / food. My recommendation is the Blue Train Cafe.
There is no denying the view is fantastic but there is no discernible
difference to the experience at the Rialto tower. $16.50 is a bit
pricey for me but if you can score a 2 for 1 discount then it might be
alright. As an alternative, I would highly recommend the FREE view from
the 35th floor of the Sofitel Hotel (especially from the men’s urinal).

Melbourne Day
Following up on Zara’s post, tomorrow is Melbourne Day.
Wednesday 30 August, 2006, represents a milestone in Melbourne’s history, marking 171 years since the city’s founding – the day the first European settlers landed on the north bank of the Yarra River from the schooner Enterprize in 1835.
There are all the usual events for the day but what struck me are the deals they are offering at certain Melbourne venues.

Coming up on the 30th of August it will be our cities 171st Birthday. The Enterprize a ’schooner’ came into the North Bank of the Yarra River, it’s crew docked, and began their new life by buidling a Storage hut. This location is now called ‘Enterprize park’ and is found at the meeting of Williams St and Flinders St.
Lots of events will be happening on the day, our lovely mayor John So will be raising Melbourne’s flag at Enerprize park at 10am, and from 10-5pm there will be a replica of The Enterprize ’schooner’ that you can board and check out!
Oh, and wonder what our flag looks like?

There is a list of facts about Melbourne day listed on this page.
The weather forecast doesn’t sound all too promising though. It’s currently listed as 13 to 18 degrees celcius with rain developing. So we could get some sun, and then rain developing later in the day.
I love Melbourne, and can’t think of anywhere else better to live right now. (I reckon the water here tastes better than in Sydney! And I spend at least a few weeks in Sydney every year for the past 8 or more years.)
