Fare fight, as the voting race heats up

So it seems like I might be right. Public transport is certainly a key plan for winning voters over. Via The Age, Parties agree to fare fight:

  • Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu says Zone 3 fares will be abolished
  • Premier Steve Bracks will do the same, and also slash V/Line fares by 20% - costing the government $94.1 million over five years
  • Zone 3 touches 1.5 million people, covering 36 stations

So, the Liberals will not only give free fares to students, they’ll abolish Zone 3 fares. Labor will abolish Zone 3 fares and also slash V/Line fares. Will the be an extension of Zone 1, no one has said yet.

As the race heats up, watch the Liberal media releases as well as the Labor media releases. There’s also the Premier’s Newsroom.

What would you like to see revamped in the public transport system?

I’d rather just see fares lowered across the board to make public transport a more viable alternative to private motor vehicles. The liberal free-tickets-for-students policy just targets a group who generally don’t have much choice but to use public transport in the first place.

I’m still waiting for cars that run in a vacuum

using perpetual motion no petrol, no cost to any one

except for the original cost of the vehicle.

Don’t hold your breath. Though you might have to if you’re waiting in the vacuum you mentioned.

Mark my prediction…Nothing will change regarding public transport. Ticket prices will increase as it has done in the past. I wish someone would just come out and say, I’m going to do nothing because really that is what is going to happen.

lol all i know is that HOPEFULLY they would get rid of zone 3. Its pretty stupid… i have to pay for 2 zones just to get from Dandenong down to Glen Waverly. No wonder the Monash freeway is packed in peak hour.

As for Ted Baillieu giving free fares to students… I wish, don’t think the government can afford to give away so much money. And i think its for students who are UNDER 14… so don’t think he’ll get many votes by promising that.

So, are we all awaiting our yearly 10% increase? Anyone stocking up on Metcards? Actually, that’ll be a good photo to send to the Herald Sun…

I don’t get why the government would increase the price of metcards. Its not like the drought has an effect on public transport… or does it? The price of milk and bread for the train conductor and administrators do add up, don’t they…

Stocking on metcards would be a good idea… Just remember these taxpayer advertisement slogans. http://www.dontholdothersback.com.au or BATBYGOBSTOPL *Buying A Ticket Before You Get On Board Saves Time Or Problems Later*

I think the problem is they spend too much money for nothing. Those ticket inspectors are a waste. Just spend money on ticket gates where only validated tickets allow you to enter the station. Hopefully the new ticketing system would fix this. http://www.myki.com.au
