There is a group of us currently at Joe’s Garage in Brunswick. Mediocre fries, smelly pizza & a smoothie which apparently “tastes like someone ate a watermelon & threw it up”.

My vote goes to Brown Sugar in Block Place, in the CBD. They have the best coffee I’ve tasted in Melbourne & great food (especially the bruschetta with basil & tomato, & the sticky date pudding).

For a gold coin donation, you can participate in various classes & receive a complimentary 7-day pass. The money raised will go the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

You need to register for the classes in advance though, so hop to it!

The amazing cupcakes from Crabapple Bakery (at the Prahran Markets) are also available in the central city at Switchboard! Switchboard is a tiny cafe in an old utilities cupboard in the foyer of the Manchester Unity building, corner of Swanston & Collins Street.

I have seen chocolate peppermint, violet & raspberry & white chocolate cupcakes on their little cake stand. Not a huge range, but definitely good for your cupcake fix! They are $3.50 & absolutely delicious — it’s also a lot closer for some of us than the Prahran Markets!

Switchboard is owned & operated by Kate & Jade, who are lovely, but I hear they’ve sold their business & it is soon to be taken over by someone else. I hope they keep the cupcakes!

It sounds kinda like an indie-fest: there will be videos of Death Cab For Cutie, Zero 7 & Badly Drawn Boy, among others. But it’ll be GREAT!

There’s also going to be a Q&A with Joji Koyama (animator & director) & Alex Maclean (creative director of Airside).

The best part is that it’s FREE, but you’ll need to rsvp to rsvp@britishcouncil.org.au.

It’s a clothing swap on a huge scale — participants are encouraged to bring up to 6 pieces of high quality clothing. When they are donated to the pool, you will receive as many tokens as pieces of clothing you submitted. Then you can essentially “go shopping”, & choose as many other pieces as your tokens will allow.

I think this is going to be incredible, & it’s a piddly $6! There is more information about it here & you need to book your place asap to avoid disappointment! Call 13-11-02 to reserve your place.

There will also be players from the AFL Western Bulldogs, which has absolutely no relevance, but yay anyway!

Plans are in the works for the demolition of the historic Fun Factory on the corner of Toorak Road & Chapel Street in the thriving suburb of South Yarra. The space would be converted into a huge retail plaza, flanked by a hotel & a high-rise apartment building. The Apple store would be the major structure in the plaza.

It’s a very raunchy-looking building. A big, super-modern, glass-&-steel structure. It looks like it might need full-time window cleaners, like the store on Fifth Avenue in New York. Pictures & original story here.
