Red Bull Music Academy
So yeah, I’ve been a bad girl…..late nights and errrr early mornings?…
If you’ve been out and about at some fantastic establishments over the weeks….you would have figured out that we, here in Melbourne, have been graced with talented djs from around the nations….I know that I’ve been experiencing some amazing ear candy!
Yup, the Red Bull Music Academy has been in town. What’s that?
The Red Bull Music Academy brings together DJs and music producers from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds to exchange their ideas about music and their knowledge of how life in the music industry works.
The two-week term schedules aim to cover all major aspects of DJ culture, including music history, technology and production, business and skills. We invite a variety of accomplished international guests – from industry movers and shakers to pirate radio station operators, from turntablists to sonic theorists – to meet our students and tell their own stories in their own words.
Noice……for the past month, the Red Bull Music Academy has been camping out in Richmond….
You’ve literally got tonight and tomorrow night to tear up the floors with some amazing talent…..’cause skools out.
Tonight head down to First Floor to Bust a Nut featuring RBMA’s Black Milk, Bubbz and Melbourne’s own Kano and Dvise or traverse the laneways to Honkytonks for The Last Dance featuring US House legend Maurice Fulton….tasty!
Tomorrow night it’s on again at Honkytonks….Lasergun featuring Le K and a few mystery Academy guests…..strap on those dancing shoes and make sure you don’t miss it ’cause you just might…..
Parklife

Last weekend was a dance off for the hippies at Earthdance, this weekend it’s the hipsters turn – and those who hold dual-citizenship like me at Parklife in Birrarung Marr.
Brought to you by the consummate party people at Future (I can remember when it was just a handful o people) – Parklife is taking off for the first time this weekend.
From noon till 10pm you can groove to the organic, techno-funk, breakbeat, electro-pop (you get the idea) tunes of inimitable deck masters like Coldcut live, Freeform Five, Mark Farina, Ian Pooley, Mixmaster Mike, Stanton Warriors, Tim Deluxe, Krafty Kuts, Cut Chemist, Kid Kenobi & MC Shureshock and Peter Hook – yes! from New Order – bring back the days of the Hacienda revolution….the list does go on.
Enjoy the Parklife
*UPDATE* bugger just realised that I can’t go…..damn, if you do – let me know how it went!
Elephant and Wheelbarrow, St Kilda
Saturday nights at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow, in St. Kilda is always a great time, as there’s a live band playing great covers! Mad props to Play-Doh.
Its filled with locals and foreigners alike, mostly of the backpacker nature, as one can gather from the band’s comments and the general consensus with people waving flags (like the Union Jack!). Drinks are generally well-priced, there’s quite a bit of foreign beers on tap, and if you’re there early enough, they even serve food.
Apparently, on Mondays, the Neighbours crowd tend to be around. Not that I’m into television, but it might be a popular place to meet some local stars. If anyone fancy’s visiting on a Monday and wants someone to take photos of them, drop me a line, I’d probably tag along.
Only complaint? It closes at a little after 3am. So you’re either going to have to move elsewhere on Fitzroy St. (and pay cover) or have a meal.

The 3 minute angels
On Friday, I decided to pay Club Retro a visit, all in the spirit of trying to show a friend of mine who’s here for three weeks, what Melbourne night-life is like.
The night started of with dinner, a visit to Workshop to start with the drinks, and then moved on right to Club Retro. There, I met my first 3 Minute Angel. Spunky young girl, studying nursing at La Trobe, telling me that a massage would cost only how much I wanted to pay for it.
There was no minimum, no maximum, and if I felt it sucked, I’d pay nothing. Beer in hand, I decided to give it a go. Rest assured, about 3-5 minutes later (time is such a warp at night!), I parted with a twenty-dollar note, and felt rather refreshed waiting to take on the dance floors!
They do corporate events, they even come over to companies. This might be a great productivity boost, getting employees to wait for their 3 minute angels every Friday, right after the pub lunch :-)

“We don’t have space for four guys, please move back in the line”
As heard at Billboard, on Russell St, on Friday at about 11.30pm.
At first I felt rather unhappy. Because a few moments before, we tried to go to Hush Bar for a few drinks but they were closed for a few private parties till about midnight.
As the night continued on, and we’d already been to Hush Bar and got bored when we were about the last ten people left there, we walked down to Crown to pay Odeon a visit. Finally I understood why the Billboard folk didn’t want us in earlier.
“Sausage-fest” as a friend described it. $15 for cover at about 3.30am, and all I could see was a dance floor filled with men!
Alas, walking into the casino, we had some good conversation over our $2.80 fish & chips meal. That by the way, used to cost a gold coin (gone are the days of $2 fish & chips).
What should I do next Friday?
